If you've walked in the same circles as I have, you're probably familiar with the phrase “worship wars.” If not, then I need to explain. “Worship wars” is a term that describes the church's internal battle over differing musical styles in worship. I know there are some churches that fought real battles in the “worship wars,” and many of them suffered great casualties. Thankfully, most churches have gotten beyond this point and have settled down into a style that fits their congregation and context.
We’ve been talking about worship wars, but not in the sense of musical styles in the church. I’ve co-opted the term to use it in a different way, in order to talk about a different kind of worship war. Since the fall of man, there has never been a time when there wasn’t a war against the worship of God (and I’m not talking about music, which is merely one expression of worship). When Satan tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God, worship wars started. And since sin is in each one of us, there is a continual war concerning who or what we worship. We have a worship war within us, every second, every minute, of every day.
The first two of the 10 commandments are about this worship war. In Exodus 20:3 God said "have no other gods before Me." In verses 4-5, he said do not "make any carved images" (idols) of anything in heaven, earth, or water, and do "not bow down to them nor serve them." To state these two commands positively is to say we should worship God ONLY and worship Him CORRECTLY.
We covered the first of these two commands on October 11. You can hear that audio here- http://www.oasisarlington.com/media/podcasts/worship-wars-1-no-other-gods.
I was ill last week and wasn't able to preach, but we will be covering the 2nd Commandment this Sunday. Join us this week while we talk about "idols of a different sort" and learn what it means to worship God correctly. These sermons are part of a larger series on the 10 Commandments.
